Yemen to begin renovating Hadhramout’s oil fields

Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Bin Daghr announced on Sunday that the government has begun renovating oilfields in the province of Hadhramaut.

During a meeting with senior government officials in Al Mukalla the capital city of Hadhramaut, Bin Daghr said his government has allocated $30 million for restoring major oilfields in the province.

Oilfields in Yemen have been deserted since the Houthis took over Yemen’s capital city Sana’a in September 2014. The move to restore oilfields represents the Yemeni government’s intention to bring back production to normal levels and boost declining financial sources.

In Hadhramaut, soldiers responsible for protecting oilfields abandoned their positions shortly after Al-Qaeda occupied the city of Al Mukalla in April last year.

Yemen has been locked in a bitter battle between Shia Houthi fighters allied with forces loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh and government forces led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, along with local tribes and resistance forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition’s airstrikes.
